Football has taken over my life!!!
I didn’t think I would be a football mum, My son was never into football, he never paid any attention to it on the TV. In fact one time when he was sitting with me while I was watching a game, he said “oh, there are two goals” that’s how much interest he paid. I’m not sure what they taught him in PE!
As he grew older and then I had twin girls I thought I had escaped the standing by the side of a field in the wind, rain and freezing cold, but oh no, both my daughters love playing football and both play for a girls team and one plays for the district girls team too. So I now find myself, on a Sunday (and sometimes Saturday) morning standing on the sidelines of a muddy football pitch.
Now don’t get me wrong I absolutely love watching them play football and actually really miss it if they don’t have any games scheduled, but its just not something I thought I would be doing.
Although they love playing football, they really don’t enjoy watching it. Which I do find odd, as I would have thought they would want to learn everything they could, so they can improve. Oh well!
Playing football has been fantastic for both of them though. They are both quite shy and wouldn’t do certain things because of being shy, but since playing football, their confidence has grown so much. There have been a few things that have happened at school that they wouldn’t have done before they started playing football. For example, they both went for speaking parts in the school play, which up to this point they had never done. It has given them a boost in compassion, leadership, social and cooperation skills. And of course takes them away from the screens.
With my girls playing football and us spending so much time at our football club, it has led to me qualifying as a FA level 1 coach and becoming the manager and coach of an under 9’s football team, which I absolutely love. This has led on to me actually playing myself too!!!! We have formed a vets team and train once a week and play in some little charity tournaments. If you have stood at the side of a pitch, watching the kids play football and thinking “I’d like to have a go at that” then go for it, it is so much fun, great way to meet new people and excellent for fitness too.
There are lots of teams starting up for ladies who haven’t played before or haven’t played for a while and want to get back into it, so why not give it a search and give it a go #thisgirlcan
